Automotive Battery Jump Starter Jump Starters are also referred to as Battery Boosters, Boost Starters, Emergency Boosters, and Portable Battery Jumpers. By true definition Jump Starters are actually a "Portable 12 Volt Power Supply" since they all contain a compact 12 volt internal battery as the actual power source. They can be used for Jump Starting a vehicle with a dead battery OR they can also be used as a portable Power Supply for small 12 Volt DC appliances and accessories. If it has a "cigarette lighter" plug on it you can operate it by plugging it in to these units. The duration of power depends on the size of the internal battery of the particular unit you purchase, and of course, the current draw of the accessory being powered. How to use as a battery booster - Jump Starter A) You can connect the alligator clamps directly to the vehicle's battery terminals and "boost start" it. This is the preferred method as you get all of the unit's available power directly into the dead battery, quickly. B) You can also plug in the Jump Starter through the vehicle's cigarette lighter receptacle for emergency starting if the unit you purchase comes with a 12 volt DC cord. While this method is preferable to some (since you don't even have to open the hood), it requires a different procedure. This method slowly transfers the power from the Jump Starter's internal battery to the vehicle's battery so you must wait a few minutes before attempting to start the "dead" vehicle. Reason: The wiring in the circuit to the cigarette lighter is a much smaller diameter (gauge) wire and it simply cannot handle all the power (amps) demanded when cranking over the engine. The cigarette lighter circuit is also fused to prevent a high amperage current draw. We offer many styles of Jump Starters.
